Reverse Osmosis (RO) purifiers use membrane technology to filter dissolved impurities.
RO membranes have hundreds of holes as small as 0.0001 microns that only allow water to pass through and filter out everything else. The impure water, along with impurities, is thrown out. This is called wastewater or reject water.
The percentage of wastewater varies based on the water quality/TDS and recovery rate of the RO purifier.
An average RO purifier produces approximately 3-liters of wastewater for every 1-liter of purified water. It means only 25% of water is purified, and 75% of water comes out as waste.
As a responsible citizen, you should not send this wastewater or reject water down the drain. This RO wastewater can be used for several other home tasks.
The latest RO water purifiers feature a recovery ratio of up to 50 – 60%. This significantly reduces the RO wastewater.
- Is RO water purifier good for health?
